Witter Towbars has been at the forefront of towbar design and manufacturing for over 70 years. Established in 1950 by Colin Witter in a converted cottage in Chester, the company was born from a clear vision: to meet the growing demand for high-quality, easy-to-fit towing brackets in post-war Britain. At a time when caravan and trailer travel was booming, Colin recognised the need for a more refined, engineered solution than what was commonly available.
From those humble beginnings, Witter Towbars has grown to become the UK’s leading towbar manufacturer, distributing over six million towbars across the country.

Engineering Excellence

Witter Towbars employs a team of fully qualified engineers responsible for taking each product from concept to completion. Our engineering process begins by analysing new vehicles and developing towbar concepts that integrate seamlessly with the manufacturer’s specified mounting points. Every design prioritises safety, structural integrity, ease of installation, and vehicle aesthetics.
Using the latest 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools, our engineers can design with precision and flexibility. Once a prototype is developed, it undergoes rigorous in-house testing on servo-hydraulic test rigs that simulate real-world towing conditions. These tests are not only conducted internally but are also independently witnessed and verified by the UK Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA).
Safety and Legislation

At Witter, safety and compliance are non-negotiable. All of our towbars meet the stringent requirements of European Type Approval legislation, specifically Regulation 55. This regulation ensures that every towbar is tested and certified to meet or exceed strict safety and performance standards set across the EU and the UK.
Only after our products meet all EC regulations will the VCA grant official Type Approval — a hallmark of quality and assurance for motorists. This means you can trust that every Witter towbar has been engineered, tested, and approved to perform safely under the toughest conditions.
