Mounting Of Cycles to Carrier

The cycle(s) should be mounted onto the two padded carrier arms with the arms underneath part of the cycle frame, e.g. top tube front or rear, forks, or seat tube, in such a way that it is balanced, firmly seated and with minimum projection beyond the sides of the vehicle. There are various ways of achieving this, some of which are illustrated below. However, because of the variety of cycle frames, shapes and sizes, it is not possible to specify any single method which would suit all types. It is therefore recommended that you experiment until you find the best method for your particular cycle(s) using the following guidelines:

		Alternately mount each cycle e.g. 1st cycle left to right, 2nd right to left etc.
		Remove any panniers, bags, bottles etc.
		Put the smallest cycle(s) on last.
		If there is interference between handle bars or seats of the cycles, on most modern cycles these can be temporarily repositioned by loosening with an appropriate Allen key or spanner.

A padded sleeve fitted to the main column can be moved up and down and positioned to prevent the cycle frame from rubbing against the cycle carrier. When more than one cycle is being carried it may also be necessary to use additional padding between the cycles to prevent scratching and chipping of the cycle components during transit.

Fit the 3 securing bungee straps provided to hold the cycle(s) in place on the cycle carrier. Although the exact method used will depend upon the type and size of cycle(s) carried, it is generally recommended that the bungee straps are used to tie the wheels back to the securing loop on the lower support bracket, and hold the cycle frame(s) onto the support arms. Carrying Capacity

The cycle carrier is designed to carry a maximum load of 65Kg, which corresponds to 3 to 4 adult cycles. However, it is essential that the combined trailer nose weight and weight of the cycles does not exceed the maximum towball noseload, as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Exceeding this load invalidates the warranty of the cycle carrier, vehicle and the towbar. Any "clip" on accessories e.g. pumps, bottles, bags etc should be removed to reduce weight.

Towing and Carrying Cycles

A useful feature of this system is that it is possible to both tow a trailer or caravan and carry cycles at the same time. The number of cycles depends upon the type of trailer being used and in particular the length and height of the drawbar and its attachments e.g. jockey wheel, handbrake, etc. It is essential that no part of the trailer can come into contact with any part of the cycles during normal manoeuvres, especially when reversing under lock. Loading the smallest cycles on last will minimise any problems. Also the removal of any "quick release" front wheels may assist. It is the driver's responsibility to check that there is adequate clearance before towing. Failure to do so could result in damage to the cycle/trailer/vehicle. Any constraint in this respect is not a function of the cycle carrier but simply relates to the available and usable space between the vehicle & trailer.

Security

In addition to the removal of any loose items from the cycles (for storage in the vehicle) it is recommended that a cycle cable or chain lock is used to secure the cycle back to the metal loop on the carrier base plate.

Lighting Board

When the cycles, or any other carried load, obscure the vehicles rear lights or registration number, it is a legal requirement to duplicate these functions rearward of the load. A suitable lighting board should therefore be used, such as the Witter unit ZX59 which is specifically designed for use with the Witter range of cycle carriers.

Number Plate Obscuration

On some vehicles where the number plate is low, the Mounting Plate 'A' will partially obscure it. A replacement plate is available - part no. ZX78/A for use with the ZX58 and ZX88 carriers or, ZX99/A for use with ZX68, ZX98 and ZX108.  Your local Witter fitting specialist will be pleased to advise you.

Cycle Storage

A kit is available as part number ZX64 which, together with the Main Column (B) and Support Arms (C) of a ZX58, ZX68, ZX88, ZX98 or ZX108 cycle carrier, provides a means of wall mounted storage of cycles either indoors or out.

Using the Cycle Carrier on Several Vehicles

Additional cycle carrier lower support brackets are available as part number ZX88/A for the ZX58 and ZX88, and as part number ZX98/A for the ZX68, ZX98 and ZX108, for owners who wish to use the cycle carrier on more than one vehicle, without the inconvenience of transferring this component from vehicle to vehicle.  Customers with number plates mounted low in the bumper can also purchase additional spare base plates.  (See Number plate obscuration for details).
